Feds Arrest ‘Ringleader’ in Attempt to Topple Andrew Jackson Statue Near White House

July 02, 2020

Feds Arrest ‘Ringleader’ in Attempt to Topple Andrew Jackson Statue Near White HouseFederal authorities on Thursday reportedly arrested a male suspect they say was the "ringleader" of an effort to destroy a statue of Andrew Jackson near the White House.Jason Carter, whom authorities said is connected to the loose knit anarchist group Antifa, was arrested Thursday morning at his home and charged with destruction of federal property, Fox News first reported. Carter allegedly led the June 22 effort to topple the statue in Washington D.C.’s Lafayette Square near the White House, which protesters said they attacked because Jackson owned slaves and because of his treatment of Native Americans.“They were very organized,” an unidentified federal law enforcement official told Fox News. “Carter was on top of the statue and directing people.""They had acid, chisels, straps and a human chain preventing police from getting to the statue,” the official said. The Justice Department on Saturday announced that four other men face felony destruction of federal property charges for their roles in attacking the statue. According to the department, the four were caught in video footage attempting to pull the statue to the ground.President Trump on Friday signed an executive order to protect American monuments, memorials, and statues in the wake of recent attacks on several monuments of historical figures in cities around the country.“Long prison terms for these lawless acts against our Great Country,” Trump wrote in a tweet announcing the order. At least a dozen other monuments to historical figures have also been targeted, including several Christopher Columbus statues. Statues of Columbus were attacked in recent weeks in Virginia, Massachusetts, and Minnesota as protests continue against racism and police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis.

Fox’s Neil Cavuto Grills GOP Rep Who Wants to Disband Coronavirus Task Force

July 02, 2020

Fox’s Neil Cavuto Grills GOP Rep Who Wants to Disband Coronavirus Task ForceFox News anchor Neil Cavuto had an intense confrontation with Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) on Thursday over his demand that the White House coronavirus task force disband, calling the Trumpian congressman out over his home state’s exploding COVID-19 cases and his own lack of health expertise.Biggs recently called for the Trump administration to scrap its pandemic task force over his belief that its public health experts, namely Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx, were undermining President Donald Trump as the president pushes for the economy to continue to reopen.Interviewing Biggs on Thursday’s broadcast of Your World with Neil Cavuto, the veteran Fox anchor—who has frequently been the target of the president’s ire over his critical Trump coverage—immediately pressed Biggs on whether he thought masks could help stem the spread of coronavirus.Hospital Workers to ‘Complacent’ Americans: Stop Right Now“I have to tell you, I’m reticent to believe that if a mask works so well, then why is L.A. spiking and surging with COVID cases when they’ve had a mandatory mask regulation in effect for seven weeks now,” the Arizona congressman replied. “There is no empirical evidence that that is the case.”Cavuto, meanwhile, pointed out that while localities may have had mask ordinances, the issue may have been enforcement and getting residents to follow the guidelines. Biggs, however, insisted that the actual problem was that masks themselves aren’t very effective, despite copious studies showing otherwise. “You don’t think it has any benefit at all?” Cavuto shot back. In recent days, Republicans and even some of Trump’s staunchest Fox allies have attempted to get the president to embrace mask-wearing to keep the economy open amid a spike in cases. The Fox host pivoted to Biggs’ demand that the task force shutter, asking the Freedom Caucus chair whether or not he thought it was risky.“No, I don’t. I appreciate what the vice president has done and I think he is done a great job,” he replied before criticizing Fauci, complaining that the top infectious disease expert has been “inconsistent” with his message.Cavuto, however, implored Biggs to “forget Dr. Fauci for a second” and think about what’s happening in his home state, which is currently suffering from the worst coronavirus surge in the nation.“You have hospitalizations and ICU bed use, the highest of this crisis,” Cavuto exclaimed. “You are telling people to get rid of it? People are listening to you and you’re saying we can ease up!”After Biggs accused the Fox anchor of “cherry-picking data,” Cavuto retorted he was doing no such thing before accusing Biggs of just wanting to get rid of the commission because it is saying things he doesn’t like. The far-right lawmaker argued that they were “undermining” Trump, prompting Cavuto to ask whether it was the president’s job to have health experts he defers to. Biggs, meanwhile, downplayed Birx and Fauci’s expertise by wondering aloud about when they last saw patients.“When’s the last time you have?” Cavuto snarked back.“I’m not a trained physician,” Biggs replied.“But you’re telling the ones who are to get out!” Cavuto shouted in response. “To get off the commission!”Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Trump Says Coronavirus Will Just ‘Disappear,’ Brags He Looks Like ‘Lone Ranger’ in Mask

July 02, 2020

Trump Says Coronavirus Will Just ‘Disappear,’ Brags He Looks Like ‘Lone Ranger’ in MaskWith coronavirus cases surging to all-time highs and states reversing reopening plans, President Donald Trump once again claimed on Wednesday that the deadly virus would eventually just “disappear.” At the same time, the president appeared to change his tune on face-coverings, telling Fox Business that he’s “all for masks” while boasting about the single time that he was spotted wearing one, claiming he thought he “looked OK” and that he resembled the “Lone Ranger.”Speaking to Fox Business host Blake Burman from the White House, the president bragged that the economy is recovering in a “very strong fashion” as states reopen businesses and public spaces following stay-at-home orders. “And I think we are going to be very good with the coronavirus,” Trump continued. “I think that at some point, that it’s going to sort of just disappear, I hope.”Rand Paul’s Coronavirus Fix: ‘We Just Need More Optimism’Burman, meanwhile, wondered aloud that Trump “still believes” that the disease will just go away, as he’s asserted many times in the past. “I do. I do. Yeah,” the president said. “Sure. At some point. I think we will have a vaccine very soon, too.”Since February, the president has repeatedly assured the public that the virus would “disappear” in the near future. For instance, in early February, the president claimed that it would “go away by April.” Later that month, when the nation’s cases were still in double-digits, he confidently declared that it would be “close to zero” in a couple of days. Even in recent weeks, after deaths had already exceeded 100,000, the president insisted it will fade away even without a vaccine.Burman eventually moved on to recent studies and models that show that mandatory mask-wearing not only would have a health benefit to the public, but would also be a net positive economically as it would help prevent lockdown. Furthermore, in recent days, some of Trump’s top allies at Fox have urged the president to wear a mask.“So if there is an economic benefit, sir, and there is a public health benefit, sir, why not go forward and say there should be mandatory masks all across this country?” Burman asked.Trump replied that he didn’t think a mandatory order was necessary because “many places” in the country feature people living “very long distances” from each other. Then the president, who has openly mocked his political opponents for wearing masks and has avoided publicly wearing face coverings, claimed he was “all for masks.”“I think masks are good,” he stated, prompting the Fox host to press whether he’d wear one.“I would—I have. I mean, people have seen me wearing one,” a rambling Trump responded. “If I’m in a group of people where we’re not, you know, ten feet away but usually I’m not in that position and everyone’s tested because I’m the president, they get tested before they see me but if I were in a tight situation with people, I would absolutely.”North Carolina’s Top Two Officials Are at War Over CoronavirusBurman, meanwhile, asked whether the public would see the president wear one at some point. The only instance of the president having been spotted with a face mask occurred during a May trip to a Ford plant, where Trump briefly donned a mask away from the press in a back area while viewing some classic cars.“I mean, I have no problem. Actually, I had a mask on,” Trump said, referencing the Ford plant moment. “I sort of like the way I looked, OK? I thought it was OK. It was a dark black mask and I thought it looked OK. Looked like the Lone Ranger. But no, I have no problem with that. I think—if people feel good about it they should do it.”The Lone Ranger, for the record, wore a domino mask over his eyes.Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar Shut Down Meghan McCain’s COVID OutburstRead more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Biden pulls together hundreds of lawyers as a bulwark against election trickery

Biden's remarks come as the candidate offers dire warnings about efforts by Republicans to cheat in the Nov. 3 election while also criticizing his election opponent, Republican President Donald Trump, for undermining confidence in the vote. A senior political adviser and top lawyer for Trump's campaign, Justin Clark, said Biden is lying and stoking fear while Democrats are trying to "fundamentally change" how elections are conducted, an apparent reference to their support for widespread mail-in voting.

Terry Crews and the Toxic ‘Black Supremacy’ Myth

July 01, 2020

Terry Crews and the Toxic ‘Black Supremacy’ MythActor Terry Crews fears an imaginary future where reverse racism—to date, a fiction—reigns supreme. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast member recently tweeted, “If you are a child of God, you are my brother and sister. I have family of every race, creed and ideology. We must ensure blacklivesmatter doesn’t morph into blacklivesbetter.” And early last month, he offered a version of the same: “Defeating White supremacy without White people creates Black supremacy. Equality is the truth. Like it or not, we are all in this together.” With these tweets, Crews seemed to be pointing to the increasing prevalence of pro-Black stances within Black communities, especially Black-activist circles and saying that they’re too much—dangerous, even. Many popular Black pundits, actors, and commentators moved to call him in and out online, expressing outrage that a prominent Black figure like Crews is using his platform to espouse “all lives matter” talking points. But the expectation that Crews employ a competent anti-racist framework misses that—in a reversal of the actor’s own hackneyed statement—plenty of Black people still need to unlearn anti-blackness, too. Jada Pinkett Smith Denies Wild Allegation That Will Smith Gave Blessing for Alleged AffairIce Cube’s Long, Disturbing History of Anti-SemitismTo Crews, affirming blackness without centering or requiring white allyship is a step toward supremacy. His is a basic misunderstanding of how race science was formed and functions, and how it resulted in systemic racism. I won’t go into that history lesson here, since I and several other writers, thinkers, activists, academics, and regular people have already done so time and time again. But what’s worth underlining is that not all or even many Black people are anti-racist experts, and there are plenty of Black people who still view their own experiences—as well as broader systemic racism—through a white lens. That’s how a white supremacist capitalist society succeeds: not simply by grooming white racists, but making it such that even the victims of racism must internalize racist ideas in order to gain status and security in major institutions. So Crews, who has become somewhat of a MeToo hero after coming forward about a Hollywood agent sexually assaulting him, is not aberrant in his desire that those fighting for Black liberation be careful to not injure white egos. Plenty of Black people—in trying to climb the corporate ladder or make it in an exceptionally difficult line of work like acting—have learned to accommodate whiteness at every step. This doesn’t mean treating their coworkers with compassion and care no matter their racial identity, but instead to specifically coddle white coworkers by taking pains to never speak up about racism in the workplace. (Non-Black people, if you’ve ever wondered why some of your Black coworkers aren’t chatty in Slack or seem formal in day-to-day communications, this could be why.) As former Cards Against Humanity staff writer Nico Carter wrote in a harrowing Medium blog post, pointing out societal and workplace racism directly led his white bosses to send him, a Black man who grew up in poverty, to a mental hospital where a white psychiatrist insisted that an anti-racist education would teach a person “that race didn’t matter at all” (according to Carter, those bosses ended up settling a harassment lawsuit with him). Crews’ perspective is the safe one, the one that will make his white colleagues feel comfortable and white producers more likely to hire him for projects. And it’s likely that even some of the Black people expressing outrage over Crews’ obtuse tweets actively accommodate whiteness in other, perhaps more subtle ways. Capitalism makes it not only advantageous but justifiable to do this to some degree—for most of us, paying the bills is largely dependent on keeping any number of white people perfectly content. Terry Crews’ anti-blackness comes as no surprise. Anti-racism work is urgent work for all of us, work that will require significant mutual aid and cooperation as we challenge the systems that dole out our checks—no matter how fat or measly—while they enact violence, often directly against us. When we say Black Lives Matter, it is in fact an invocation of Black liberation as a mission that liberates everyone, since affirming blackness, specifically and without qualification, is a vital step toward undermining the centuries-old oppressive systems that weigh so heavily on our societies. Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Intel Proves ‘Russian Bounties’ Were No Hoax, House Dems Say

July 01, 2020

Intel Proves ‘Russian Bounties’ Were No Hoax, House Dems SayA group of House Democrats left a classified briefing at the White House Tuesday morning, on  reports that Russia paid Taliban fighters bounties on U.S. soldiers, with complaints that Trump administration officials were not more forthcoming about the intelligence. And they also left with lots of questions about why the president—who has dismissed the story as another “Russia hoax”—is not being more forthcoming with criticism for Russian president Vladimir Putin.“The president called this a hoax, publicly,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the number two House Democrat, at a Capitol Hill press conference after returning from the White House. “Nothing in the briefing we just received led me to believe it’s a hoax. There may be different judgments as to the level of credibility… there was no assertion that the information we had was a hoax.”“We did not,” said Hoyer, “receive any new, substantive information.”And Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said that the “right people to give the briefing were not in the room,” noting the absence of intelligence agency leaders. Schiff also addressed the question of whether or not Trump himself was briefed on the intelligence, as the initial report in The New York Times alleged and Trump denies. “There may be a reluctance to brief the president on things he doesn’t want to hear,” he said. The Daily Beast reported on Tuesday that top White House officials did not want to brief Trump on the Russia bounty intelligence for fear he’d resist or ignore the information. Schiff also questioned why the Trump administration has not addressed how it will respond to Russia. "I find it inexplicable in light of these public allegations that the president hasn't come before the country and assured people that he'll get to the bottom of whether Russians are putting bounties on the heads of troops,” said Schiff, who said that U.S. officials should be considering sanctions on Russia, not inviting them to multilateral talks like those in the G7.The Democratic lawmakers said they were unable to elaborate on why the intelligence was not, as Trump claimed, a “hoax.” They are requesting an all-member briefing from intelligence officials soon. But a key focus going forward, said Hoyer, is learning more about what Trump knew about the matter, and when. If Harry Truman said the “buck stops with me,” quipped Hoyer, “Trump says, I didn’t see the buck.”Trump Officials Didn’t Want to Tell Him About the ‘Russian Bounties’The lawmakers’ tone was a stark departure from what House Republicans had to say when they left a briefing on the matter at the White House yesterday. A GOP attendee, Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), tweeted that White House officials had debunked what he called The New York Times’ “hit piece,” and blamed the paper for reporting details about the alleged bounty system. “Now it’s impossible to finish the investigation,” said Banks. “Many in the media & Congress rushed to judgment before learning the whole story.”Democrats were not present at that meeting, which Banks said featured Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and “top intelligence officials.” Spokespeople for Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Armed Services Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) all told The Daily Beast on Monday they had not been invited. On Tuesday, Hoyer said that Meadows called him on Sunday night about setting up a briefing for a small group of Democratic lawmakers. The Democrats’ calls for additional briefings are likely to set up a showdown with the White House, which the lawmakers say has not taken the Russia intelligence seriously enough to warrant the all-member briefing they believe is necessary. Schiff said his committee has also requested additional documents to review as it investigates the matter.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Warren Introduces Nationwide Eviction Moratorium Bill

July 01, 2020

Warren Introduces Nationwide Eviction Moratorium BillSenator Elizabeth Warren on Monday introduced a bill that would extend a nationwide eviction moratorium as the current eviction protections in response to the coronavirus pandemic near expiration."Renters who have lost their job or had their income reduced shouldn't have to fear losing their homes in the middle of a pandemic,” Warren said in a statement announcing the bill. “Housing is a human right and an absolute necessity to keep families safe during this crisis, and Congress must step in now to help keep people in their homes.”The Massachusetts Democrat's bill, the Protecting Renters from Evictions and Fees Act, would extend eviction protections until March 27 of next year and would apply to nearly all renters and landlords. The measure would also prohibit fees, fines, and extra charges due to non-payment of rent and require landlords to give tenants a 30-day eviction notice after the moratorium expires. The bill extends and expands the current 120-day eviction moratorium that was included in the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, a massive spending package intended to buoy the flagging economy amid the pandemic. Those eviction protections are set to expire on July 25 and applied to only renters in federally assisted housing. An even larger $3 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, the HEROES Act, which passed the House but has stalled in the Senate, includes an eviction moratorium similar to the one in Warren's bill.Warren is introducing the legislation in tandem with Representatives Jesús García, an Illinois Democrat, and Barbara Lee, a California Democrat, who are introducing a similar measure in the House.“My district consists principally of immigrant and working class communities, and more than half of my constituents are renters,” Garcia told Vox. “As our country faces historic levels of unemployment and with another first of the month around the corner, people in my district are hurting — the last thing they should worry about is having a roof over their head.”Warren's bill comes as low-income renters in many states struggle to pay rent on time after months of layoffs and reduced income due to business closures during the lockdown and stay-at-home orders.

Biden team putting together list of Black female court picksJoe Biden said Tuesday that his team is putting together a list of potential options for his first Supreme Court nominee, which he has already pledged will be a Black woman. Biden had previously committed that one of his first acts as president would be to nominate a Black woman to serve on the country’s highest court, but he had resisted calls from advocacy groups to commit to releasing a full list of options during the campaign. In contrast, President Donald Trump pledged earlier this month to release a new list of Supreme Court nominees from which he would choose, declaring that “based on decisions being rendered now, this list is more important than ever before.”
